NOTE: The high cost of this Top-Heavy Government is paid for NOT from PAP Party Funds BUT from PUBLIC FUNDS (i.e. the hard-earned monies of S'pore Taxpayer-Voters collected through numerous taxes/dues)

(a) PM Lee Hsien Loong confirmed as "World's Highest-Paid Politician" by Economist/Financial Times.

(b) All the world's Top 30 highly-paid politicians are found in SINGAPORE (in PM Lee's Cabinet, of course!).

1.6 Singapore's fat-cat ministers getting fatter each year:

BASIC Annual Pay (Source: Straits Times reports)

President's pay: $2.6m(2006) $3.2m(2007) $3.9m(2008)

[THIS MUCH for a largely ceremonial post (shaking hands, kissing babies, cutting ribbons, opening Keppel Bay bridge, attending charity functions, hosting state dinners ....) ??? ]

PM/MM/SM's pay: $2.5m(2006) $3m(2007) $3.8m(2008)

DPM's pay: $2m (2006) $2.5m (2007) $3m (2008)

Minister's pay: $1.2m(2006) $1.6m(2007) $1.9m(2008)

[Current MP Allowance (for a part-time job!) = $13,500 per month]

[PM Basic Pay = $3.8m per year = $320,000 per month = $10,000 per day]

[Minister Basic Pay = $1.9m per year = $160,000 per month = $5,000 per day]

1.7 Justifiable/Understandable Anger of S'pore Voters:

(a) We, Singaporeans, Not DAFT!!!

Neither are we uncivilised nor barbaric to expect our Politicians/Bureaucrats to work "for free" or to survive on "fresh air and love of the people".

We will readily support adequate/reasonable remunerations.

BUT the above figures are not just humongous but obscenely-humongous salaries, going by both local/international PUBLIC SECTOR standards!!!

(b) How could tiny Singapore's PM be earning six times the pay of the American President and ten times that of the Japanese PM and the Australian PM???

[All the latter three Heads of State are governing very big countries with large populations, and very complex political/economic/social issues. ]

If Singapore's PM screws up, only S'poreans will suffer.

But if the American President screws up (and presses the wrong buttons), the whole world (including little red dot Singapore and its entire Lee Family) could go up in nuclear smoke!!!

c) Are we paying TOO MUCH for TOO LITTLE transparency and accountability???

Do we really have a "visionary and competent" Government or just "grossly over-paid" Politicians/Bureaucrats???

With such obscenely-humongous public sector salaries, how can these PAP politicians ever earn the "moral authority" [much less the respect] of S'poreans to govern this tiny island nation???

1.8 AN IMPORTANT NOTE:

(a) The above-stated mind-boggling SINGLE-DIGIT MILLIONS represent just BASIC Annual Pay i.e. excluding mid-year bonus, year-end bonus, Performance Bonus, GDP Bonus, CPF/PENSION and other perks.

TOTAL Annual Pay = (disclosed) BASIC Annual Pay + (undisclosed) bonuses/other perks.

(b) For our political office holders, their Basic Annual Pays are publicly disclosed. However, their undisclosed Total Annual Pay packages have been an endless source of speculation and bottled-up public anger on the Internet.

(c) For Comparison, the 2010 TOTAL Annual Pay packages (as DISCLOSED in published Annual Reports) of the CEOs in various public-listed Temasek-Linked Companies* range from $6.7m to $11.5m.

In 2007, CapitaLand CEO Liew Mun Leong (a former pen-pushing Civil Servant) received a whopping Total Annual Pay of $20.5m --- which led to a public outcry.

(d) Taking the cue from the CEO pay packages of Temasek-linked companies, many netizens have "deduced" that the Total Annual Pay packages of Temasek Holdings CEO Ho Ching and our Cabinet Ministers would likely be in the two-digit millions and upwards of $15m.

But this could mean anything between $15m and $99m --- hence the never-ending and widespread Internet speculation surrounding Ministers' Pay.

2. Suggestions to address/defuse Public Anger

2.1 Since 1994 (when the PAP Govt first bull-dozed through Parliament and arm-twisted Singaporeans on the Ministerial Pay Issue), there has been never-ending public consternation over the million-dollar remunerations of our political office holders.

As such remunerations are paid out of public funds, Singapore taxpayer-voters certainly have every right to know the full facts and figures.

Lack of transparency on this rightful public concern will only aggravate the voter disenchantment that turned into a Super-Tsunami Wave of Public Anger during the recent general elections.

2.2 In the private sector, to promote good corporate governance, the Singapore Stock Exchange requires public-listed companies to disclose the Total Annual Pay packages within salary bands for their CEOs and other senior staff.

Our public sector should also follow suit as an act of good political governance.

2.3 Put simply, "TALK IS CHEAP" and S'pore Voters expect nothing less than PM Lee Hsien Loong to "WALK THE TALK" on the following:

(a) his inaugural speech (as PM) calling for "an open and inclusive Singapore".

(b) his brief to the Salary Review Committee to make recommendations which will "help ensure honest and competent government".

[NOTE: All the three words "open, inclusive, honest" carry this same message --- to "come clean" and "clear the air" once-and-for-all on whether our Cabinet Ministers are really serving the people (as their true masters) or enriching themselves at the expense of the people (as taxpayers).]

Ethical Dilemma

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I'd like to buy some cyanide...."

The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"

The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband."

A well known Anti-Semite, walks into a bar and is about to order a drink when he sees a guy close by wearing a jewish cap / kippa, a prayer shawl / tzitzis, and traditional locks of hair / payos.

He doesn't have to be an Einstein to know that this guy is Jewish.

So he shouts over to the bartender so loudly, that everyone can hear,

"Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, but not for that Jew over there.”

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Installing a Husband

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as

NBA 5.0,

NFL 3.0 and
Golf Clubs 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

.Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

DEAR DESPERATE,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html, try to download Tears 6.2, and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.

If those applications work as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1.

Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0-program. This is an unsupported application and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.

Alexander The Great’s Last Words

"Eyes melt when hated"

Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. He now longed to reach home to see his mother's face and bid her his last adieu. But, he had to accept the fact that his sinking health would not permit him to reach his distant homeland. So, the mighty conqueror lay prostrate and pale, helplessly waiting to breathe his last.

He called his generals and said, "I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail."

With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king's last wishes.

"My first desire is that", said Alexander, "My physicians alone must carry my coffin."

After a pause, he continued, "Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury".

The king felt exhausted after saying this. He took a minute's rest and continued. "My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin".

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king's strange wishes. But no one dared bring the question to their lips. Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart.

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.

And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world".

With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquers him and breathed his last. . . .

中文字的奧妙，常常讓學中文的老外暈倒，說幾個聽來的段子：

一、方便

一位剛學過一點中文的美國人來到中國，中國朋友請他吃飯。

到了飯店落座，中國朋友說：「對不起，我去方便一下。」

那老外沒聽明白，「方便」是哪裡？

見老外疑惑，中國朋友告訴他說「方便」，口語裡是「上廁所」的意思。

哦，老外意會了。

席間，中國朋友對老外說：「我下次到美國，希望你能幫忙提供些方便。」

老外納悶了：他去美國，讓我提供些廁所幹嗎？

非常有效的治咳秘方

材料~~1.桑叶 2.枇杷叶 3.麦芽糖

以上材料请至中药房购买，一帖桑叶和枇杷叶各半〈1：1〉合计约50元

做法~~

1.将叶子清洗干净后加三碗水煮至剩一碗

2.喝时趁热加入适量麦芽糖~温热饮用
3.煮过的材料亦可再煮第二次

桑叶：味甘、微苦，性寒，入肺、肝经，功能疏散风热、清肺止咳、平肝明目。

枇杷叶：清肺和胃，降气化痰。治肺热痰咳，咳血，衄血，胃热呕哕。(资料引用：行政院卫生署中医药委员会〉

Until a child tells you what they are thinking, we can't even begin to imagine how their mind is working....

Little Zachary was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried everything...tutors, mentors, flash cards, special learning centers. In short, everything they could think of to help his math.

Finally, in a last ditch effort, they took Zachary down and enrolled him in the local Catholic school. After the first day, little Zachary came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn't even kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying.

Books and papers were spread out all over the room and little Zachary was hard at work. His mother was amazed. She called him down to dinner.

To her shock, the minute he was done, he marched back to his room without a word, and in no time, he was back hitting the books as hard as before.

This went on for some time, day after day, while the mother tried to understand what made all the difference.

Finally, little Zachary brought home his report Card.. He quietly laid it on the table, went up to his room and hit the books. With great trepidation, His Mom looked at it and to her great surprise, little Zachary got an 'A' in math. She could no longer hold her curiosity. She went to his room and said, 'Son, what was it? Was it the nuns?'

Little Zachary looked at her and shook his head, no. 'Well, then,' she replied, ‘Was it the books, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms? WHAT WAS IT?'

Uncle Tony & the Bar

Here's a good one for Tony F, CEO of AirAsia, to have a taste of his own medicine.

Arriving in a hotel in KL Sentral, Unlce Tony went to a bar and asked for a pint of Guinness draught.

The barman nodded and said, "That will be one ringgit please, Uncle Tony."

Somewhat taken aback, Uncle Tony replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money.

"Well, we try to stay ahead of the competition", said the barman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday evening from 6 until 8. We have the cheapest draught in Asia."

Catholic Heart Attack

A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The store clerks called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open-heart bypass surgery.

He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital that he was taken to. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment.

“Do you have health insurance?” she asked.

He replied in a raspy voice, “No health insurance.”

The nun asked, “Do you have money in the bank?”

He replied, “No money in the bank.”

“Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?” asked the irritated nun.

He said, “I only have a spinster sister, and she’s a nun.”

The nun became agitated and announced loudly, “Nuns are not spinsters… nuns are married to God!”

Simplified Economics Lesson

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all.)

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.

Chinese in their economic wisdom taught her race this - 'if you give a fish to a hungry man, you only feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish (stand on their own feet and not rely on tongkat forever), you feed him for life.' (授人以鱼不如授人以渔)

This explains the economic miracles of China today, as well as in Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong where the people there are all industrious and resilient. But in this country they depend on Tongkat Ali forever.

The quality of a nation does not depend on the quantity of the people therein, but the quality of her citizens. Here in this country we are getting more and more Negros and Africans, Indonesians, Bangladeshi, Myanmar people, Cambodians, Pakistani, and Arabs coming in and flooding our streets at every corner, instead of encouraging progressive Japanese, Koreans, Chinese from China, innovative and highly educated Indians from India and westerners to come.

That is the difference between this country and the rest of all other progressive countries, even in Asia. The government in her folly has made them a weaker and weaker race, while other races becoming more and more resilient, more and more determined to overcome themselves being marginalized. They become more and more hard working, more and more socially and biologically stronger. They become more and more successful as other races. What a shame when others look down on you like beggars.

Standard Chartered, Nescafe & Air Asia (Adult Joke)

Mr. & Mrs. Ng have 3 lovely daughters: Elaine, Ena and Ella.

The 3 daughters were brought up in a prim-and-proper way and when they reached 20, they were still virgins. Years passed, and it was time to get them married.

So, the parents found them the most suitable 'leng chais' (Cantonese for 'handsome guys'). They got married and were preparing to set-off on their honeymoon.

As 'concerned' (more like 'kay-poh', Hokkien for 'busybody') parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ng were curious about their daughters' first-night experience. So, before the daughters went on their respective honeymoons, Mrs. Ng told them......'Your father and I want to know about your 1st night encounters and whether you are satisfied. Write a letter to us, but as not to raise your husbands' curiosity...you all must use a code-name to describe your experiences.’ So, the excited daughters were off.

A week passed. Mr. & Mrs. Ng got the first letter. It was from Elaine. They opened the letter and found the word 'STANDARD CHARTERED'. They immediately took the newspaper and looked for the Standard Chartered advertisement. 'Ah! here it is!', exclaimed Mr. Ng. The motto for Standard Chartered was... 'BIG, STRONG & FRIENDLY'. Mr & Mrs. Ng were happy.

A week later, they got another letter. This time it was from Ena. The content was simple. 'NESCAFE'. So, again they took the newspaper and looked for the Nescafe ad. 'Ah! here it is.. 'NESCAFE: PLEASURE TILL THE LAST DROP'. Mr. & Mrs. Ng beamed with joy.

Another week passed. A month passed. And another. There was still no letter from Ella. The Ngs became worried. Finally, the letter came. It was scribbled and could hardly be read, but Mrs. Ng managed to figure it out. The code-name was 'AIRASIA'.

Why 'AIRASIA'...? Mr.Ng rushed to the nearest store and got a newspaper. He flipped the pages frantically. 'Ah! Here it is!' Mrs. Ng grabbed the page and read aloud. Before she could finish .......THUMP!!!...she fell off her chair.

The motto was ...'7 DAYS A WEEK. 6 TIMES DAILY. NON-STOP'!!!

Cry Your Heart Out

There was a study done where a controlled group of 100 people were divided into two: 50 people watched a very funny, tears-of-laughter type movie; and another 50 watched a very sad and tears-of-compassion type movie.

At the end of the sessions researchers collected the 'happy tears' and the 'sad tears' with eye droppers.

They found that 'happy tears' are made up of brine...salt water and not a great deal else.

However the 'sad tears' were found to contain the very same chemicals and enzymes that are found in tumors, ulcers and other such lumps and bumps and sicknesses throughout the body.

This test concluded that the body, when crying in sadness and etc, is literally flushing out all of the toxic-chemicals that accumulate and are a part of the sadness /heartache experience.

Therefore if one holds back those tears, those toxic-waters will find somewhere else to deposit themselves....and prolonged lack-of-crying-release will guarantee that the body will accumulate a huge amount of internal pollution and toxicity that should have been released through the tears........is it any wonder that the eyes sting so much when we hold back our tears?'

Fishing Trip (Joke)

Four guys have been going to the same fishing trip for many years.

Two days before the group is to leave, Nick's wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn't going.

Nick's friends are very upset that he can't go, but what can they do?

Two days later the three get to the camping site only to find Nick sitting there with a tent set up, firewood gathered, and dinner cooking on the fire.

"Hey Nick, how long you been here, and how did you talk your missus into letting you go?"

"Well, I've been here since yesterday. Yesterday evening, I was sitting in my chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and said, 'Guess who?'

On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie and cuff her to the bed, and I did.

From No Stress To Fatal Stress

A friend (not the writer) who has lost both her aged parents within 6 months this year, shares this story...

"I would like to share with you an actual but very sad occurrence which I hope may get you to ponder over what constitutes anxieties, extremities and unnecessary over reactions. A long story... but worth reading for lessons learned.... you may want to SHARE WITH others.

One of my friend's father who is a retiree in his mid-60s, is perfectly healthy looking and behaving normal, plays his round of golf each Sunday, does a fair bit of gardening, keeps himself busy the rest of his time helping his son's (my friend's) little retail business, and goes on tours/trips every now and then .....

He was persuaded by his daughters and other well wishers to go for his medical checkup which he had last done before retirement some 10 years ago. He didn't see the need to do it as he was feeling perfectly ok and healthy. Of course he didn't want to spend the money. After persistent persuasion from his family he finally gave in (his daughters agreed to foot the bill).

First his blood test revealed a total cholesterol count well above the 5.2 threshold (in fact close to 6). The doctor advised that he went for his stressed ECG test.

Again he had to be persistently persuaded to go thru that test, which he did. And it revealed some abnormality with his heart.

Now the doctor advised that he went thru angiogram. He resisted again and again after much pestering he subscribed to that invasive test.....which revealed three (3) blockages in his heart. And the doctor advised he went thru angioplasty.

This time he was adamant not to go any further. But it was like the end of the world for his family members who were all highly educated people with learned common sense. They went thru the highest mountains and deepest oceans to convince the old man to go thru angioplasty.

The surgery was successful. And he was given a clean bill of health. His heart is revitalized and cleared of all blockages. After returning home from the hospital, his family (especially his daughters) put him on a "healthy" diet. Strictly no meat...only vegetables and fruits, with perhaps an occasional dish of steamed fish... no oil.

The result.... the poor old man became weaker, couldn't drive his golf ball the distance he used to, got tired easily when he did his gardening, lost a lot of weight (which everyone was happy because they see him getting healthier that way), went to bed unusually early ('cause he got tired sitting up late watching the sports channels).... in a nutshell he actually got weaker and probably suffering from mal-nutrition!

Hardly 2 months after the angioplasty he passed away, supposedly from heart complications.. All of a sudden, a few family doctor friends were able to offer explanations. One of them had this to say...

Heart blockages do not happen over-night. They are built up of time. And the body has somehow gotten used to the blockages. As long as the effects of the blockages are not life threatening, it may be best leaving them alone. Maybe it is better not to know about this. For most men at that advanced age already have blockages, some may be even worse. Not knowing it has one clear advantage. There won't be any STRESS imposed on the person.

And STRESS is the killer.

Some may not respond well with angioplasty. With the heart cleared of its blockages, the blood flow will be unrestricted. And sometimes the body (even the heart may not be used to this new revitalized condition) may not know how to cope with it quick enough. Coupled with a "healthy" diet of just fruits and vegetables which are not the usual and normal intake of this person, may and can do further damage.

So it's a combination of all these that could have killed this poor old man who was, just 2 months ago, a healthy bubbly man living a perfectly normal STRESS FREE retired life.

Today my friend and his siblings all regretted what they had done to their father.

Moral of the story is not to be extreme and take everything in life in its stride and with moderation.

One more thing.... my family doctor, age late 40s, hardly takes meat, a good sportsman, has a total cholesterol count of 6.

Some times it's in the genes. Like my 99 year-old mother-in-law who lives by herself, does her own marketing, cooks her own food, never eats any meat that is not fat all her life, hates lean meat, cholesterol so high ......and she is still kicking and so mentally alert. One thing....she's got NO STRESS.

She only gives STRESS to all others around her. That's probably why she's living alone by herself.

So my friends... Don't get paranoid and stressed up for nothing!!!

Making A Baby (Clean Joke)

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.'

Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...'

'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.'

'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?'

'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat!’

After a moment she asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?'

'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.'

'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!'

'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.'

'My, that's a lot!' gasped Mrs. Smith.

'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be in and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.'

'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly.

瞬间强肾法，一招治肾虚

　　我的老师胡海牙先生今年已经95岁高龄了。前一段时间陪他去体检，身体各项指标基本都正常。他单位的老同事跟他见面后，开玩笑地说：“您的身体棒得跟30岁小伙子似的，有什么养生秘诀吗？您是研究道家仙学的，也给我们传授一些灵丹妙药啊！”老先生微微一笑，说：“哪有什么灵丹妙药，妙药就在自己体内，只是你们不知道怎么用罢了。”

　　老师的一句话激起了大家的好奇心，纷纷请教。只见老师双手握拳，贴在身后，随着身体的上下轻微抖动，笑呵呵地说：“看明白了吗？就是这个。”大家看得一头雾水：“就这么简单？！”

　　老师颇有深意地说：“千万别小看这个动作，在过去你花多少钱都不一定能学得到，这可是千金不换的秘诀啊。”这样一来，大家更好奇了，赶紧追问是怎么回事。

　　老师说：“其实古书里面都讲了，‘流水不腐，户枢不蠹’，要活就得动啊，关键是如何去动。这个方法最大的功效是鼓动肾气，短时间内使人体阳气升发起来。肾乃先天之本，主人体水液，喜暖怕寒。长期从事脑力劳动的人好静不好动，导致人体阴气过盛，阳气相对不足，会产生乏力、疲劳、健忘等症状，用这个方法三到五分钟，就可以缓解一个小时连续劳动的疲劳，很适合现在从事脑力劳动的人。这个方法还适合中老年人，人老腿先衰，腰腿痛相连，其实是肾气衰了，按摩肾腧有直接补肾的功效。中老年人平时动一动，肾气足了，自然腰背也就不弯了。”

　　
听了老师这么一解释，大家纷纷学着刚才老师的样子比画起来。我也习练这个方法多年，觉得特别好，亲身实践下来更是深有感触，获益匪浅，我把这种补肾升发阳气的方法称为“瞬间强肾法”。

　　曾经有一次应约到北京一所著名高校讲养生，有学生问我：“您既搞临床诊疗，又写博客又写书，怎么还有那么好的精力呢？”我没有直接回答他的问题，而是从座位上找了一位看起来精神不太好的学生，让他到台前做个试验。

　　我让他双手握拳，拳心虚空，贴在肾腧位置，利用膝关节的上下抖动进行反复摩擦，双拳不动，双脚随着身体抖动轻微踮起，感觉到腰部轻微发热为止。三五分钟后，这位学生高兴地说：“从来没感觉这么轻松过，这个方法真神！”一时间，课堂上沸腾起来了。

我让这个学生做的方法，就是瞬间强肾法，方法很简单，就是两脚分开与肩齐宽，双膝微曲，双手虚握拳，贴在肾腧位置随着身体的抖动而上下抖动。

　　这个方法对谁最管用？恰恰是过度疲劳、精神不好、睡眠不足的人。

　　现在大多数人连休息的时间都没有，更不用说保持充沛的精力了。前苏联有一位生理学家，经过多年的研究，发现人的疲劳并不能单纯靠休息来缓解，也就是说休息不是恢复疲劳的最好方法，最好的方法是通过运动来恢复，比如说散步、爬楼梯、慢跑、打球、练瑜伽等都可以，平时利用饭后睡前的时间做些轻量的运动，一天的疲劳感很快就能缓解。

How to Fight Dementia?

Most of us start worrying about dementia after retirement - and that may be too little, too late. Experts say that if you really want to ward off dementia, you need to start taking care of your brain in your 30s and 40s - or even earlier.

"More and more research is suggesting that lifestyle is very important to your brain's health," says Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a neuro-psychologist and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "If you want to live a long, healthy life, then many of us need to start as early as we can."

So what can you do to beef up your brain - and possibly ward off dementia? Nussbaum, who recently gave a speech on the topic for the Winter Park (Fla.) Health Foundation, offers 20 tips that may help.

1. Join clubs or organizations that need volunteers. If you start volunteering now, you won't feel lost and unneeded after you retire.

2. Develop a hobby or two. Hobbies help you develop a robust brain because you're trying something new and complex.

3. Practise writing with your non-dominant hand several minutes everyday. This will exercise the opposite side of your brain and fire up those neurons.

4. Take dance lessons. In a study of nearly 500 people, dancing was the only regular physical activity associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The people who danced three or four times a week showed 76 percent less incidence of dementia than those who danced only once a week or not at all.

5. Need a hobby? Start gardening. Researchers in New Zealand found that, of 1,000 people, those who gardened regularly were less likely to suffer from dementia! Not only does gardening reduce stress, but gardeners use their brains to plan gardens; they use visual and spatial reasoning to lay out a garden.

6. Walking daily can reduce the risk of dementia because cardiovascular health is important to maintain blood flow to the brain. Or... buy a pedometer and walk 10,000 steps a day.

7. Read and write daily. Reading stimulates a wide variety of brain areas that process and store information. Likewise, writing (not copying) stimulates many areas of the brain as well.

8. Start knitting. Using both hands works both sides of your brain. And it's a stress reducer.

9. Learn a new language. Whether it's a foreign language or sign language, you are working your brain by making it go back and forth between one language and the other. A researcher in England found that being bilingual seemed to delay symptoms of Alzheimer's disease for four years. And some research suggests that the earlier a child learns sign language, the higher his IQ - and people with high IQs are less likely to have dementia. So start them early.

10. Play board games such as Scrabble and Monopoly. Not only are you taxing your brain, you're socializing too. Playing solo games, such as solitaire or online computer brain games can be helpful, but Nussbaum prefers games that encourage you to socialize too.

11. Take classes throughout your lifetime. Learning produces structural and chemical changes in the brain, and education appears to help people live longer. Brain researchers have found that people with advanced degrees live longer - and if they do have Alzheimer's, it often becomes apparent only in the very later stages of the disease.

12. Listen to classical music. A growing volume of research suggests that music may hard wire the brain, building links between the two hemispheres. Any kind of music may work, but there's some research that shows positive effects for classical music, though researchers don't understand why.

13. Learn a musical instrument. It may be harder than it was when you were a kid, but you'll be developing a dormant part of your brain.

14. Travel. When you travel (whether it's to a distant vacation spot or on a different route across town), you're forcing your brain to navigate a new and complex environment. A study of London taxi drivers found experienced drivers had larger brains because they have to store lots of information about locations and how to navigate there.

15. Pray. Daily prayer appears to help your immune system. And people who attend a formal worship service regularly live longer and report happier, healthier lives.

16. Learn to meditate. It's important for your brain that you learn to shut out the stresses of everyday life.

17. Get enough sleep. Studies have shown a link between interrupted sleep and dementia.

18. Eat more foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids: Salmon, sardines, tuna, ocean trout, mackerel or herring, plus walnuts (which are higher in omega 3s than salmon) and flaxseed. Flaxseed oil, cod liver oil and walnut oil are good sources too.

19. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables mop up some of the damage caused by free radicals, one of the leading killers of brain cells.

20. Eat at least one meal a day with family and friends. You'll slow down, socialize, and research shows you'll eat healthier food than if you ate alone or on the go.

Thank you for seeking my opinion about your relative’s case with palpitation of his heart, and the attachment of his 2-D cardio-echogram which showed nothing of significance.

Sorry for the delay in replying as I have a lot of other things to do.

Causes:

It is quite common to have palpitations of the heart. In normal circumstances the heart maintains a heart rate at about 65 -70 beats per minute at resting stage, slower at resting or sleeping stage, and faster in strenuous exercise when extra oxygen is needed . However, this also depends on the status of the heart's electrical system to conduct electricity through the heart muscles for the heart to pump blood.

Nevertheless, if there are changes in the levels of salts (electrolytes) like potassium, magnesium, and calcium, these too can affect hear rhythm and cause palpitations. A lack of iron that normally cause iron deficiency in women causing anemia or if the thyroid gland is overactive, a condition called hyperthyroidism, these too can cause the heart to pump faster or abnormally, a condition a patient feels it as palpitations.

Exercise, anxiety, fear, excitement, and anticipation can cause the heart to beat abnormally fast. These are the most common causes. The doctor needs to look into all these common causes first instead of suddenly do a 2-D cardio-echogram on the patient. This is far more expensive and totally unnecessary, except if a leaky heart valve is suspected. In that case, there are many other symptoms and signs, such as breathlessness, easily get tired, clubbing of the fingers, central cyanosis (blueness of lips, fingers, toes, tongue, etc).

Other common causes of palpitations may be due to drinking coffee (caffeine), smoking (nicotine), and drinking (alcohol). These substances like the hormone adrenalin is also released during exercise, excitement, fear, fight, anger, threats, etc. These stimuli act on the heart to cause it to beat faster > 100 beats per minute (tachycardia).

Often certain medications taken by the patient, especially pseudoephedrine, or even an herbal heart stimulant (ma huang), or even medications like albuterol inhalers or theophylline for asthma and thyroid replacement medications can all cause heart palpitations.

Other causes:

Of course there are also illegal hard drugs like cocaine, amphetamine, PCP, and marijuana that can also all cause the same pharmacological effect on the heart.

Adrenalin level in the body is increased at times of stress, and this itself can cause rapid heart rates. These, as well as exercise, and emotional factors are physiological responses that all may cause palpitations. These are the most common causes, but the palpitations may not last long, just for half hour or slightly longer depending on how long the stimuli act and last.

Of course there are also specific causes of palpitations due to structural abnormalities in the heart. For instances, if the coronary arteries are narrowed due to cholesterol and plaque deposits or an inflammation, they can cause a decreased in blood supply to the heart muscle. These can irritate the heart muscles, and cause abnormal heart beats like premature ventricular contractions, ventricular tachycardia, or ventricular fibrillation.

Structural wiring abnormalities can cause paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias or Wolfe-Parkinson-White syndrome. But these are much rarer, and can easily be detected by a simple and much cheaper ECG instead of doing a 2-D cardio-echogram which actually detects structural abnormalities of the heart rather than abnormalities on the electrical conduction within the heart muscles. They may not be the cause of palpitation.

Heart valves incompetence:

Heart valve incompetence can also cause irregular heart beat in about 40% of people especially those with mitral valve prolapse. But these are much rarer. Heart valve prolapses and incompetence can easily, easily be detected by simply listening to the heart with a stethoscope, so why use 2-D echogram for this?

The doctor needs to take history of all these causes first, and then use his clinical judgment to find out exactly why he has temporary palpitations of his heart. Sometimes it is due to an overactive thyroid gland, and there is excessive thyroid hormone.

However, sometimes palpitation may be due to a condition in which the thyroid gland is over active, a clinical condition we call hyperthyroidism.

Auscultation of heart for murmurs:

But the easiest of all signs is the murmurs of the heart which can easily be heard with a stethoscope without costing a single cent to the patient. All these should have been done first as they are the easiest to detect, most common causes of palpitation, and it does not cost a single cent to the patient to listen to the heart for murmurs using a simple stethoscope. So why must that doctor ask him to straight away do a 2-D echogram of his heart which is really a great waste of money and totally unnecessary?

ECG is best for electrical conduction anomalies:

I just cannot understand the justifications of doing this at great cost to the patient who merely has palpitations for only a short period of time. To do an echogram instead of a much cheaper ECG is really beyond belief. An ECG to look if there was any abnormality in the electrical conduction (heart block) that will show up as irregularities in the PQRST waves in the ECG would have been far more useful. As far as I am concerned, he has been cheated of his money by his doctor who did the unnecessary echogram on the patient.

Electrical anomaly:

An ECG would have brought up blocks within the sinoatrial (SA nodes), antrioventrcular node (AV node), below the AV node (infra-Hisian block; named after the bundle of His), within the left or right bundle branch or within its fascicles (hemiblocks).

These would have identified either first, second degree AV block (Mobitz I, II or Wenckebach block), or a total heart block (third degree block).

Clinically speaking, most of the important heart blocks are AV nodal blocks and infra-Hisian block. Even these may not necessary be the causes of common palpitations as I have already explained.

Take medical history first:

The first step in the ethical practice of good medicine is to ask the patient what is his complaints, how long has been his condition, under what circumstance does he have the symptoms, etc. This is the first step if he is a good diagnostician with very good clinical acumen and clinical judgment, and not all those scans and blood tests. A well-trained and experienced clinician can make a minimum of 80 % accuracy by just taking the history and just by asking and listening to what the patient has to say. That is the first step in good medical practice.

Only if…:

It is only when the doctor comes to a date-end with the history-taking and the basic clinical examination, or the need to differential diagnose from other conditions that mimic the symptoms, would he request for laboratory examinations. No good and well-trained and experienced medical doctor will jump the gun from using basic examination first.

The doctor needs to take history of all these causes first, and then use his clinical judgment to find out exactly why he has temporary palpitations of his heart. Sometimes it is due to an overactive thyroid gland, and there is excessive thyroid hormone.

Sometimes palpitation may be due to a condition in which the thyroid gland is over active, a clinical condition we call hyperthyroidism.

Hormone evaluation later:

If we suspect his heart palpitation was due to an overproduction of thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) or hyperthyroidism causing thyrotoxicosis, or certain conditions like Graves Disease (example), then there is justifications of doing a blood test, else, a big NO. A very competent clinician (medical doctor) uses his ears, ears, fingers and good judgment, not all those scans and blood tests first.

More clinical signs and symptoms:

If he suspects the patient’s palpitation is due to an overactive thyroid gland, the main clinical signs he should look for would be:

1. Weight loss (often accompanied by an increased appetite)

2. Anxiety
3. Intolerance to heat
4. Hair loss
5. Muscle aches, weakness and fatigue
6. Hyperactivity
7. Irritability
8. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)
9. Apathy
10. Polyuria (increased urine volume), and Polydipsia (excessive thirst)
11. Delirium
12. Tremor
13. Pretibial myxedema (PTM) or thyroid dermopathy
14. Sweating
15. Palpitations and arrhythmias especially atrial fibrillation
16. Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
17. Loss of libido
18. Amenorrhea (in women)
19. Nausea
20. Vomiting
21. Diarrhoea
22. Gynaecomastia (breast enlargement in males and feminization)
23. Osteoporosis (if untreated)
24. Ocular (eye) signs such as eyelid retraction ("stare")
25. Lid-lag (von Graefe's sign)
26. Extra-ocular muscle weakness

If these signs are present, all the doctor needs to do is to confirm them by a simple blood test on the levels of his thyroid hormones. A blood test for thyroid hormones is much simpler, and far cheaper. That’s all that is needed.

All I know is that the patient has been cheated by his doctor by asking him to do an unnecessary 2-D cardio-echogram for a simple palpitation of his heart that lasted just a few hours. I just cannot believe these types of doctors are roaming in our decent society?

I have explained here far more than what his doctor would have done for him, or told him, and I don’t wish to discuss any further as it is not profitable and unnecessary for me.

To Live with Mosquitoes or Go to the Moon?

Look, we all MUST die one day, sooner or later – either from any of the lung diseases - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), malignant tumors, from small cell lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, carcinoid, Kaposi’s

Alternatively, we suffer from acoustic neuroma, and sensorineural hearing loss from the use of ultrasonic mosquito repellent.

If you then chose not to use neither mosquito coils nor ultrasonic mosquito repellants, then suffer sleepless nights, weal, irritation, urticaria, acute myocardial infraction and sleep deprivation from mosquito bites.

If we still do not want these either, then suffer death from malaria, dengue fever, filariasis and elephantiasis, viral encephalitis, chikungunya, and other mosquito-borne diseases.

You choose your own sufferings and mode of death if you don’t want to live with Mother Nature and her mosquitoes around.

But if you still think you do not want any of the above either, but choose to sleep in an air-conditioned room, then you are back to square one once again on lung disease by suffering from Legionnaire's disease.

You choose either this Legionella bacteria from your air-con, or the Plasmodium parasite and other viruses carried by the mosquitoes.

But if you are still undecided after what I tell you here which way you want to suffer death, then I suggest you go to the Moon and stay there permanently. There you will find neither mosquito, water, food, air, noise, companion, nor e-mail messages to permanently trouble you any further.

It’s up to you.

I re-echo what I earlier said. The Moon is the best place for these people who do not like mosquitoes around. There on the Moon, they will find a vacuum, no mosquitoes around, no anti-mosquitoes ultra-sonic sound (devices) needed, not even ordinary sound they could hear with no air to transmit it.

They will also not be able to burn anything including mosquito coils, no air or insecticide pollution, no food, no water, no bacteria … nothing, just moon rocks and moon dusts and them alone.

There, they will live forever, and ever in absolute harmony with Moon Nature, because these doctors, scientists, environmentalists, and health fanatics do not like Mother Nature on Earth, or want any disease-carrying mosquitoes around to live in peace and in harmony with them.

These creatures inherited Earth a 100 million years ago, long even before the dinosaurs, let alone human being.

They have every right to be here on Earth, because God planted them here. Yet they want to fight them?

My advice to these doctors, health freaks and fanatics is, just don’t mess around with Mother Nature. Nature will fight back. They will be born losers.
