A Half-day Trip To Visit KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall

On Friday August 30, 2019, my wife Soh Ai and I went to The Kuala Lumpur And Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH吉隆坡暨雪兰莪中华大会堂) at Jalan Maharajalela, K.L. by car at 10.45am to pay a visit the “Angel's Hand Painting Exhibition And Photography And Hundred Quilts Exhibitions” (天使之手画展,摄影照片及百家被展卖) organized by the Women’s Division of The Federation Of Chinese Associations Malaysia or Hua Zhong (华总妇女部) in conjunction with 2019 Malaysia Women's Day and Merdeka Celebration.

My cousin brother Pan Mok Weng and old buddy Anthony Kon also joined us at about 11.00am and 11.20am respectively.

It is understood that “quilts” (百家被) are blankets or bed-covers made of pieces of clothes or multi-layered textiles woven together that in Chinese tradition for children to bring luck, health, wealth and fortune from others.  In the 21st century, quilts are frequently displayed as non-utilitarian works of art.

We met Soh Ai’s friend Chee Hui Tow, the chairperson of the Women’s Division of Cheras Hokkien Association (蕉赖福建会馆妇女组主席钱穗桃) and who participated with a painting in the exhibition.

After chit-chatting and viewing the exhibits, we roamed the street of the nearby Kampung Attap and finally settled for lunch at an Indian stall by the road side near KLSCAH. We had curry fish head (RM20), curry sotong (RM20), fried cauliflower (RM8) and vege (RM6), while Anthony separately a plate of rice with fried fish, fried chicken and others (RM13). The curry sotong was very tasty and the curry fish head had little meat. The total cost including 4 glasses of teh-tarik came to RM79.

After lunch, we returned to the Assembly Hall and paid a brief visit to the Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies (华社研究中心).  We found out we could enter the library and view the books or magazines only if we registered as temporary or permanent members of the Centre.

We left and parted ways at about 2.15pm with Anthony taking the monorail to continue his trip to somewhere else in town, while Pan was fetched by me to Eko Cheras Mall to pay his first visit to that mall.

Soh Ai and I returned home at about 3.00pm.
