These treatment suggestions for corona virus infection are in part reply to Prof Dr. Sen Gupta questions to me.
I would like to suggest using steam inhalation + cod liver oil (retinol or vitamin A) + several pro-vitamin A carotenoids (most notably beta-carotene) + high doses of vitamin C at 500 mg tds (500 mg three times a day = 1,500 mg) at 8 hour interval.
A vegan or vegetarian diet rich beta carotene is - carrots, yellow or orange sweet potatoes, dark leafy green vegetables, spinach, red and yellow peppers, and fruits such as papaya and mangoes. Hence a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is very infection-protective.
There are some evidences that high doses of vitamin C can be used to treat cases of coronavirus infection here:
It has been shown that vitamin C plays a role in the defence mechanisms against microbial invasion by increasing the number and function of phagocytic cells and their phagocytosis.
The pathway taken is through the generation of reactive oxygen free radicals against the bacteria and also by increasing the chemotaxis of neutrophil granulocytes.
Chemotaxis is the movement of an organism such as lymphocytes in the white blood corpuscles in response to a chemical or clinical pathology.
It probably works in the same way for a virus infection by mobilizing the plasma B and T cells of the lymphocytes by generating different components of antibodies (immunoglobulin IgA, IgE, IgM…) against viruses including SARS CoV and Covid-19.
The findings and reasons are the same as what double-winner Linus Carl Pauling advocated using mega doses of vitamin C in treating and preventing a cold caused by almost the same type of nasal and respiratory viruses such as rhinovirus, coronavirus, RSV and para-influenza viruses and Covid-19 virus.
However hospitals use intravenous injections of the same dose of vitamin C for rapid infusion.
However, in my professional opinion this is unnecessary because vitamin C nutri-kinetics of absorption, distribution, retention time and excretion into the urine is very rapid - within just 4 hours after blood saturation.
Hence logically it does not make sense to me to infuse vitamin C via IV for rapid blood saturation because this will proportionally decrease the retention time and accelerate the time of excretion.
What is more important and troublesome especially with the current pandemic of coronavirus and the lockdown in most countries, if IV is given, it has to be done in a hospital, and this is the worse time to go to a hospital and get yourselves exposed. There is a very high risk factor if you go to a hospital.
Hence I STRONGLY recommend that doses of vitamin C be given ORALLY at 8 hour interval as its kinetics of excretion is within 7 – 8 hours at this dose.
Lower doses causes longer retention time due to a delay in tissue absorption from the blood whereas higher doses than 500 mg tds causes a very rapid loss into the urine.
My very strong recommendation is that vitamin at this doses is to be taken ORALLY in the comfort of our home (NOT go to a hospital for IV bolus infusion) .
Next, 5 ml (teaspoonful) of cod liver oil three times a day is an adjunct treatment or prophylaxis against respiratory infections.
DO NOT exceed this dose, else there may be a risk of hypervitaminosis A and liver damage.
The rational and pharmacodynamics (mode of action) of vitamin A is to increase the bronchial ciliary sweep in the airways to remove any virus trapped in the bronchial tubes so that they can be swept upwards into larynx and from there swallowed down the oesophagus into the digestive tract where proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes will act on the protein-coat (capsid) of the coronavirus and destroy the virus instantly.
Mucus Clearance:
In short simple technical language, vitamin A in cod liver oil enhances mucus clearance and greatly reduces the virus load in the throat and respiratory airways.
A decrease in the virus load will give time for the body to build up its immunoglobulin (IgA IgE, IgM…) against the virus.
Antibodies Response to Virus Load:
The lesser the virus-load the better it is. The infected person will remain symptom-free for much longer time until antibodies can be produced in response.
Similarly, if there is a fever do NOT suppress the fever with an antipyretic such as paracetamol.
The fever is there to STAY. The fever is there to fight an infection through many pathways. Do NOT suppress it to immobilize its pathogenic-fighting functions.
Cough:
Likewise, if you develop a cough, especially a productive cough with phlegm, do NOT suppress it. Cough it out together with the phlegm and the virus stuck on to the sticky mucus.
Cough reflex has a sound physiological function whereby the body tries to reduce the virus load or any pathogen or chemical irritant in the airways.
Hence, do NOT use cough medicines to block the cough especially antitussives that are cough suppressants. They relieve your cough by blocking the cough reflex. Expectorants maybe used as they thins the mucus, but even that is not advisable
It is much better to use physical therapy such as steam inhalation. The reasons are found in this blog
